Whether you've just arrived or just started college, these are the essentials of finding and keeping part-time work in Ireland.
- Friendly but professional. Irish workplaces are informal — first names for everyone, including managers — but reliability still matters. Showing up on time, every time, builds your reputation fastest.
- Small talk is part of the job. A chat about the weather, the weekend or sport isn't wasted time; it's how trust is built with colleagues and customers. "How's it going?" usually just means "hello".
- Humour and humility. Light banter is normal and being able to laugh at yourself is valued. Boasting is not — Irish culture prefers understatement, so let your work speak for itself.
- "Grand" means fine. You'll hear it constantly. Other essentials: "give out" (to complain), "press" (cupboard), "your man" (that guy), and "sure look" (it is what it is).
- Tea and breaks. Offering to make tea for the team is a genuine social gesture. Take your legal breaks — 15 minutes after 4.5 hours and 30 minutes after 6 hours of work.
- Speak up politely. Hierarchies are flat. If something is wrong with your roster or pay, raise it directly and calmly with your supervisor — this is expected, not rude.
- National minimum wage: €14.15 per hour for adult workers from 1 January 2026. Sub-minimum rates apply to those under 20.
- Payslips are your right. Every employer must give you a written payslip showing gross pay and all deductions (PAYE, PRSI, USC).
- Terms of employment. You must receive core terms in writing within 5 days of starting, and a full written statement within one month.
- Sunday work usually attracts a premium — extra pay, an allowance or time off in lieu.
- Holiday pay accrues for part-timers too — generally 8% of hours worked, plus public holiday entitlements once you've worked 40 hours in the previous 5 weeks.
- Problems at work? The Workplace Relations Commission (WRC) handles complaints, and Citizens Information (citizensinformation.ie) explains your rights in plain English.
Figures change with government budgets — always confirm current rates on citizensinformation.ie or gov.ie.
- 1. Get a PPS number. You need a Personal Public Service number to work and pay tax. Apply through MyWelfare.ie — you'll need ID and proof of address.
- 2. Register on Revenue myAccount. Once you have a PPS number, register at revenue.ie and add your job. Skipping this puts you on emergency tax, which takes far more from your first payslips (you get it back, but slowly).
- 3. Open an Irish bank account. Most employers pay by bank transfer. Digital banks are the quickest to open; traditional banks may ask for more documents.
- 4. Get references ready. Irish employers usually ask for 1–2 references. A previous employer, lecturer or volunteer coordinator all work.
- 5. Know your Leap Card. A TFI Leap Card makes buses, Luas and DART much cheaper — and a Young Adult/Student Leap Card cuts fares further.
- Stamp 2 (student visa) hours: up to 20 hours per week during term time, and up to 40 hours per week only during designated holiday periods (June–September and mid-December to mid-January).
- EU/EEA students have no hour restrictions from immigration — only what your timetable can handle.
- Balance is everything. Most students find 15–20 hours sustainable alongside lectures. Employers on our platform know they're hiring students and roster accordingly.
- Exams come first. Good employers will flex your hours around exam periods — ask early, not the week before.
- Your part-time job is a career asset. Irish graduate employers genuinely value retail, hospitality and operations experience — it proves customer skills, teamwork and work ethic.

Does Stratevera charge candidates?
No. Joining the community, applying for any role we share, being screened and being introduced to an employer are always free, and no payment can improve your chances with an employer. We separately offer an optional paid service, Managed Applications, where we write your documents and submit applications for you. It is never required, and its terms are here.
Does Stratevera decide who gets hired?
No. We promote vacancies, carry out basic screening and connect potentially suitable candidates with employers. The employer runs interviews and makes the final hiring decision.
Where do the jobs come from?
From partner employers who work with us directly, and from vacancies we find and verify across the wider Irish market.
I'm on a Stamp 2 student visa — can I use Stratevera?
